I have never liked football so much, despite the fact that my
family watches every game on weekends, from the Chilean league to the European
one. That is why my family felt so much the death of Diego Armando Maradona. My
brother especially felt it a lot, because he is one of his "idols",
that's why he saw all the reports that were shown on television.
In my ignorance of this sport, I sat on the couch with my
brother to see the skills and goals of Diego Armando when he plays for Boca
Juniors, Napoli and especially for the Argentine National Team. At that moment
I realized why so much fanaticism, why so many people mourn a man who had only
played excellent football. I knew that he was very close to the political left,
he also had a tattoo of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. In my search I realized
that in his childhood he lived in Fiorito one of the oldest and poorest towns
in Buenos Aires. He was very poor then and one of his most remembered anecdotes
is that with his first salary he bought a house for his mother.
However, is it possible to separate the artist from his work?
Considering that Maradona lived a life of excesses and sexist practices, it
seems questionable to "deify" him. Therefore, it seems necessary to
remember him only as a skillful man is his job, but not an example to follow,
much less a "god on earth."
